Don grew up in a family of Longshoremen and spent his summers commercial fishing for 20 years. Don was also a teacher and a coach for 32 years, during which time he piloted an elementary school p.e. program as part of a 21st Century school improvement grant, then found an opportunity to help struggling teens by co-founding an alternative high school in the Ferndale, WA School District. With a primary focus in math, science, health, technology, and small business management, he has woven these disciplines into a broad, pragmatic perspective regarding our countries’ job dilemma.
Upon retirement Don has become a “political Junkie” and is passionate about the plight of the “99ers”; unemployed workers who have lost unemployment support. Also, as an avid cook, he hopes to assist low income families in preparing nutritious inexpensive meals and is writing a book, "$10 Meals for a Family of Six," soon to be published.
Don runs and writes for the blog Buy American 1st, along with his partner, Ardis. The Winning Words Project is proud to be able to share Tom's contributions here.
